Learn English fact #2

How many different ways can you pronounce the letters “ough” in English?

There are 7 in common use in British English:

  1. through (rhymes with “blue”)
  2. though (rhymes with “go”)
  3. cough (rhymes with “off”)
  4. plough (rhymes with “how”)
  5. rough (rhymes with “stuff”)
  6. borough (sounds like the “er” sound in “brother”)
  7. ought (rhymes with “taught”)

Can you pronounce them all?

The Oxford Advanced Learner Dictionary has examples of them all: just type in the word and press the speaker!
